Verse 1:
Arotesa, Arotejo, Arotepakube
Oro kan ni be'le ti oju ogun lo
Cast Ifa for Akerenikeyo
On the day he was going to ascend his father's throne
He was told to sacrifice;
His clothing, kolokolo and a he goat
He refused
Akerenikeyo was the heir apparent. When he was on the way to take the throne, Akerenikeyo went to consult Ifa. At that time he was advised to sacrifice his royal gown, kolokolo. In addition, the awos told Akerenikeyo not to get carried away by over celebrating his success too soon. "Do not count your chickens before they are hatched," is how the awos advised him. Akerenikeyo ignored their advice.
Two days before the coronation ceremonies, Esu sent drummers to where Akerenikeyo was. As they played. Esu then convinced Akerenikeyo to dance. After all, he was poised to become king. There was cause to celebrate. And so Akerenikeyo started to dance and rejoice. Akerenikeyo started to sing out loud. Then he started to jump and flip. It was then, while Akerenikeyo was flipping, Esu blinked his eyes. Akerenikeyo fell to the ground and broke his thigh bone! Consequently, the kingmakers determined that a man in that condition was not fit to serve as king. And so, Akerenikeyo's younger brother ascended the throne in his place.
Verse 2:
Here, the Irunmole gathered together in order to determine who would become their leader. Orisanla was the one who proposed that each of them should host a feast in their respective homes. As a show of good faith, he proposed to host the first feast at his home in Iranje.
It was then that Esu appeared, warning the Irunmole that he must be allowed to host the first feast. Otherwise, he would turn the entire process upside down. The Irunmole rejected his idea and shut him down on the spot. Esu admonished them, telling the Irunmole that not even Olodumare could restrain him. Still, they did not take Esu's proposal seriously. And so, Orisanla advised the Irunmole to be ready for the first feat at his home.
On the designated day, Orisanla had prepared an elaborate feast, with an abundance of food, drinks and great pageantry. Once the Irunmole had assembled, Orisanla brought out the obi to pray. In the midst of the invocations, however, there was a terrible scream from Orisanla's courtyard. Two of his children had been overtaken by seizures. Somehow, nobody could save them and the two children died. And so, the first feast started with joy, but ended in sorrow.
At the next meeting of the Irunmole, it was determined that Ogun would host the second feast. Unfortunately, the exact same thing that happened in the house of Obatala also took place at Ogun's house. It recurred again and again in the houses of Sango, Olokun and Osanyin. Finally, it was Orunmila's turn to hold a feast.
Orunmila went to consult Ifa regarding his upcoming feast. Would it be a disaster? Would joy become sorrow? The awos advised Orunmila that he was about to embark upon a venture that others had tried and failed. They explained to him that something was done out of order, which was why the others had failed. The awos told Orunmila to sacrifice a he goat, the bronze images of a man and lead casting of a woman, mud images of a male rabbit and a female rabbit. All of these were to be taken to the ojubo Esu, where the icons would be fed before the feast.
Orunmila complied. On the day of the feast, all the divinities arrived. They found an elaborate display and evenyone was enjoying the festivities. Finally, it was time for Obatala to split the obi for prayer. As soon as he started to make the invocations, however, a terrible shriek came from Orunmila's courtyard. One of his sons and one of his daughters had fallen into convulsions. But when the Irunmole went to tend to them, Esu caused the children both to sneeze and they were instantly better.
At that moment, the Irunmole noticed the figure of the bronze man dancing with the lead woman. Likewise, they saw the mud figures of the male and female rabbit dancing as well. While the Irunmole were captivated by the spectacle, Esu commanded the chickens to go and devour all the food that had been set for the feast.
It was then that Esu reminded the Irunmole of his promise, that unless he was able to host the first feast, there would be no feast at all. And so, the divinities all agreed that Esu should host the first feast. And so, they all gathered at his house on the appointed day. Esu had prepared an elaborate feast with an over abundance of food, drinks and elegant decorations. The Irunmole ate and drank to satisfaction and then Esu brought out the figures of the bronze man and the lead woman. They began dancing for the divinities. He then commanded them to take the figures and melt them down to make different denominations of coins. Orunmila heralded Esu as the creator of money, which has the capability to make or break a person, depending upon the way it is used in one's life.
Verse 3:
Cast divination for the Frog
That was trapped in the trench excavated by man
The frogs got trapped in the trench
They could not find a way out
Meanwhile man had dug this trench for water collection
It was very deep
‘How can we now get out of this’? They asked
Òòsà was however traveling from Iranje ile to Iranje oko
Orisanla was hunting for erin, an elephant in the forest. In the process, he happened upon a group of frogs who had fallen into a trench. They called out to Orisanla, "Help us! Please, help us! We are trapped here and certainly will die without your assistance. Please, save us!" Obatala replied, "I cannot delay. I have an important mission to accomplish. I am in search of something very rare and important." The frogs asked, "What is it you're looking for? Maybe we have seen it while we have been trapped here. We could possible help you." And so, Orisanla explained that he was looking for an elephant, to which the frogs replied, "Oh, is that it? Just an elephant?! We can easily procure, not only one, but two hundred elephants for you in an instant. Just get us out of this trench and you'll see!"
Orisanla removed his ado asure
• medicine gourd • and he recited an incantation which made it rain heavily. As it rained, the trench was filled and the frogs escaped. Then, Obatala demanded his elephant. Much to his surprise, however, the frogs responded, "Elephant? Do you really think we could capture an elephant, as small as we are? You should have made a better assessment of our capabilities before entering into such an agreement. No, we never promised erin. Instead, we promised orin (songs).
And so, Obatala pointed his ado asure at the frogs and commanded that they would produce two hundred songs for him, which is what they are doing to this date. Frogs sings endlessly for Obatala.
